Will Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock on the PS3 ever be as cool as the Doctor …

Doctor Who Eternity Clock

Following the release of a new trailer for the forthcoming PS3/Vita game Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, we get all nostalgic about the Doctor Who pinball from the 90s.

Announced in December last year, BBC Worldwide has just released a new trailer for Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, the first in a planned series of three video games based on the popular timelord’s adventures.

Set to be released in March on the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita, with a PC version to follow, The Eternity Clock features voice-acting from Matt Smith as the Doctor and Alex Kingston as River Song, but little is known about the plot.

The trailer talks about a storm threatening to “tear the universe apart” that the Doctor needs to “fix”, but the presence of the Cybermen, the Daleks, the Silurians and the Silence will make that mission particularly hazardous.

The side-on platform action looks great, especially against the backdrop of a decimated London, and there are hints of levels taking place inside enemy spacecraft to get excited about too. You can see the new trailer below.

Doctor Who has been the subject of many video games over the years, from the 8-bit adventures in the early 80s to the more recent Return to Earth on the Nintendo Wii. However, none have ever quite captured the brilliance of Bally’s pinball machine.

Released during the 90s resurgence in pinball’s popularity, and when Williams/Bally/Midway ruled the arcade halls, the Doctor Who machine took full advantage of the license by using the familiar score and digitized voices of the Daleks and Davros.

Early versions also had a moving Dalek head that sat on top of the machine, and despite being removed to keep costs down, enterprising fans have made a kit that reinstates the feature on surviving tables.

It’s probably the three-level platform that raises and falls in the center of the table which most players will remember though, as it not only provided depth to the gameplay, but also activated the frantic multi-ball mode.

When you’re done watching The Eternity Clock’s video, take a look at the promo video below for some nostalgic pinball fun, along with a brief glimpse of the cool moving Dalek head.
