Jak and Daxter Collection Heads to PS3 in HD Next February

Naughty Dog has become synonymous with the Uncharted series in recent years — releasing three games from the same series in a row will do that to you. The Santa Monica-based developer has a history that goes back much further than the release of Drake’s Fortune in 2007, though, having made a name for itself on the original PlayStation with Crash Bandicoot. When the PS2 came along, Naughty Dog shifted its efforts to its new Jak and Daxter series. With the franchise’s 10-year anniversary coming up early next month, the Jak and Daxter Collection has been officially announced (again) and is headed to PlayStation 3 early next year.

Collection’s release will mark the debut of Jak and Daxter on PS3, unless you count the appearance of the two titular characters in Nihilistic Software’s PlayStation Move Heroes as a debut. Its existence had been previously revealed by listings on a retailer’s website and Germany’s ratings board website before being confirmed by SCEA earlier this month.

Today’s announcement details what’s inside the package. You’ll get the first three games — Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, and Jak 3 — remastered in 720p, complete with what’s said to be “smoother gameplay animation,” and support for both 3D and Trophies.

As is often the case with these HD Collection-style releases, an external company is handling development. “[W]orking closely with” Naughty Dog is Mass Media, which has worked on a number of games over the years including Tetris Evolution, Full Spectrum Warrior, and StarCraft 64. Its involvement shouldn’t come as an enormous surprise to anyone who has visited its website recently. A listing for what it’s current working on mentions, “We are currently working deep in the trenches to optimize PS3 code for a high-profile multi-platform action adventure.”

Naughty Dog had previously indicated it was interested in working on a new Jak game. “We definitely hear a lot from our Jak fans and we’d love to be able to be working on a new Jak product at some point,” said community manager Arne Meyer back in 2009. “That might be on the cards.” He did however add that the developer was currently busy with Uncharted, a situation that doesn’t appear to have changed since then.

While this new bundle is hardly a new game, its success, one would think, could pave the way for an all-new new Jak and Daxter game.

A price for Collection was not announced — similar products have been released in the $40 range — but we do know it’ll be coming to PS3 at some point in February.
