Game of Thrones Action-RPG Announced For Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Atlus, HBO and Cyanide Studios have announced that an action-RPG based on the hit book series A Song of Fire and Ice and the HBO television series, Game of Thrones, will be arriving for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in early 2012.

Shinichi Suzuki, President and CEO of Index Digital Media commented in the press release, saying…

“The Game of Thrones television series and the A Song of Ice and Fire book series it is based on represent some of the most captivating, original medieval fantasy and drama ever created,” … “Its amalgam of bitterly antagonistic rival houses, deeply nuanced characters, intricate political machinations, and breathtaking fantasy-all set within a richly storied world-offers unparalleled realism and raw emotion. We are honored to work with HBO, Cyanide Studios, and the great George R. R. Martin in bringing an exciting action RPG set in this beloved fantasy universe to fans and gamers in early 2012.”

In other words, Suzuki is saying ‘I can’t believe no other studio jumped on the chance to make an action-RPG to milk console gamers who play games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do so.’

Players will take on the role of one of two original characters as part of Robert Stark’s rebellion to avenge the death of his father. The 30-plus hour game will see players travel throughout many of the lore’s famous locations, including King’s Landing and The Wall. Multiple quests and story-changing objectives will also be present.

This is the second game to emerge based on A Song of Fire and Ice, only this time players will focus more on the thrill of being in the world as opposed to overseeing it from a commander’s view in Cyanide’s previous strategy game, Game of Thrones: Genesis, which didn’t fare too well in the view of most critics.

James Costos, VP of HBO Global Licensing also chimed in with his thoughts, saying…

“This is a wonderful way for fans to engage with the brand in an exciting and interactive way,” … “ATLUS and Cyanide are leaders in developing world class games with broad accessibility so the partnership was an ideal fit for us.”

Game of Thrones is set for release in early 2012 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Depending on if they have all the boobies and blood like the TV show will probably determine if it’s rated Teen or Mature. Conveniently enough gamers can pre-order the game right now (even though there are no screenshots or media available) and you can stay tuned to learn more about the game by visiting the Official Website.
