PS3 firmware 3.73 is an optional update

PS image

PS3 owners, it’s that time again. It’s time for a new firmware! Yes, I know. I groaned when I heard about it too. Fortunately, Sony isn’t forcing firmware 3.73 on us. We have a choice! If you want it, you can head to settings and choose to download the update. If you don’t want it, then keep using your PS3 as usual.

As for what PS3 firmware 3.73 does, nobody really knows. Well, I’m sure Sony has an idea, but it didn’t go into details. All it mentions is a stability fix for certain PS3 games. So I guess some games may have had some minor quirks while running, perhaps an occasional crash or freeze, and this should take care of that problem.

If you do decide to update, make sure you have a book handy. It probably will only take about 15 minutes to go through the motions, but you never know. Unless you’re actually having issues or have the system set to automatically update, I’d recommend just letting this optional firmware pass you by and wait until Sony’s (probably) mandatory 3.74 update comes along.
