PS3 hardware sales up 20 percent year-over-year

NPD Group Inc. this week reported Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked as the No. 2 best-selling game hardware in Sept. U.S. retail figures

The PS3 moved an estimated 374,000 units in the month.

Sony this week said the PS3 hardware sales held a 20 percent increase and software held a 52 percent increase from the year prior.

Sony in July posted a $191 million loss in the first quarter amid lower sales of the PS3.

The company sold 1.8 million PS3 units in the quarter, down from 2.4 million one year prior.

It expects to sell 15 million PS3 units in the next fiscal year, an increase from 14.3 units.

Sony in Aug. price cut the PS3 160GB SKU to $249.99.

In addition, the PS3 320GB Move Bundle now sells at $349.99.

The Playstation 3 320GB Infamous 2 Bundle includes the PS3 320GB hardware SKU, Infamous 2, a 30-day Playstation Plus trail membership and Dualshock 3 Controller at $299.99.

In Nov. it will sell the Playstation 3 320GB Uncharted 3: Drake’s Fortune Bundle at $299.99.
