Rage Has an 8GB Install on PS3, Uses Three Discs on 360

Confirming what was reported by a Dutch website last month, id Software creative director Tim Willits has discussed one thing that sets the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Rage apart.

The PC version, as we already know, requires 25GB of space on your hard drive to install. Luckily the benefits of Blu-ray allow all of that to fit on a single disc, but it also comes with a drawback: there is an 8GB install you’ll be faced with before playing.

“Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don’t allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off,” Willits told Eurogamer. “What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it’s just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it’s all the same. Some of the other systems you have… should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it’s very nice.”

On the 360 side, the game will come on three discs. Installation of the game isn’t mandatory, so it’s up to you whether or not you want to occupy your hard drive space with the game. Installing all three discs is said to take up about 22GB in total, but you can avoid taking up unnecessary amounts of space all at once by installing only one disc at a time.

“We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don’t need to install all three discs,” Willits explained. “If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two.”

If you so choose, you can go back to the content on the first disc at any time “but there’s really no reason to.” The multiplayer disc doesn’t have to be installed if space is at a premium, and if you really want, you could always play the entire game without installing a thing — just don’t count on having the most ideal experience.
